For episode 23 & 24 of the Outstanding Ohioans show, I had the pleasure of interviewing sports On-Air Radio Personality/Producer Dave DeNatale from ESPN Cleveland radio.

I first met Dave as fellow students at Bowling Green State University.  Like Dave, I initially started out interesting in sports broadcasting, but then I chose a different path.  I did have the pleasure of meeting Joe Tait with Dave when Mr. Tait came to campus.

A couple of years ago, I was visiting family in Northeast Ohio.  I tuned into 850 AM to hear some Cleveland sports talk.  I heard Dave talking, and I got such a kick listening to him and his enthusiasm.

In his fantastic book The Greatest Salesman In The World, Og Mandino listed ten commandments for success.  The third commandment was "I Will Persist Until I Succeed".  As you will hear in the podcast, Dave embodies this virtue as well as any person I have ever known.  He will share some personal stories about his health and his dedication to his craft that has led to some unique, valuable experiences in his profession.

Here are some highlights from our conversation:

  • His parents and grandparents were outstanding role models growing up in Northeast Ohio.  They taught Dave the value of belief, humor, being genuine, supportive, importance of education, and hard-working.
  • Being "Pen-Pals" with Doug Dieken, and how he got to meet Nev Chandler when he was 15 years old, a relationship that developed into Nev mentoring Dave.
  • His "many" options of going to college, ultimately choosing Bowling Green State University.
  • Involvement in BSGU student-run radio station, and the experiences he acquired.
  • His journey working at radio stations in Defiance, Ohio; Carroll, Michigan; and Oberlin.
  • Why the Browns continue to get more support than the Indians?
  • How radio has changed and is continuing to change
  • Difference in criticizing in amateur vs. professional sports
  • his "Bull Durham"-like summer working as the play-by-play voice of the Lake Erie Crushers
  • His advice to people wanting to enter this profession:
    • learn how to write
    • acquire versatile skills in multiple roles
    • acquire some TV production background
    • become credible through honesty and being genuine
    • have a fall back plan
  • His aspirations are to host his own show and be the play-by-play voice of a college or professional team.
  • Dave desires to leave behind a legacy of:  passion, doing things the right way, serving the best interests of people around me, being genuine & credible, treating people the right way
